January DFMies: Gun-Control Coverage, Scandals, Multimedia, and More

Digital First Media editor-in-chief Jim Brady conducted a Google Hangout with the January DFMies winners last week. You can find the segments on each winner's spotlight post.

Enterprise coverage of gun-control issues, scandal coverage and some spectacular multimedia projects won DFMie awards for January. Read/watch the winning entries and hear winners explain how they did their work:

  • BANG: Reporter Josh Richman wins in the Bay Area News Group for his reporting on gun control laws in California.
  • Colorado/Utah: Robert Gehrke and Tom Harvey of the Salt Lake Tribune won in the Colorado/Utah cluster for their coverage of a scandal surrounding Utah Attorney General John Swallow.
  • LANG: Team coverage of the release of more than 4,000 pages of documents relating to sexual abuse in the Los Angeles Archdiocese wins in the Los Angeles News Group.
  • Midwest: Jason Henry of the Morning Journal in Lorain, Ohio, wins in the Midwest cluster for a series on heroin addiction.
  • Northern California: The Santa Cruz Sentinel wins in the Northern California cluster for its coverage of the Mavericks International surfing contest.
  • Northeast: The Daily Freeman in Kingston, N.Y., wins the Northeast cluster for a multimedia travel feature on the Mohonk Mountain House.
  • PA/NJ/WV: Reporter Danielle Lynch and Editor Phil Heron won in the Pennsylvania/New Jersey/West Virginia cluster for their reporting and commentary on the gun debate in the Philadelphia area.
  • Texas/New Mexico: In another winner focused on gun violence, Taryn Walker of the Carlsbad Current-Argus wins in the Texas/New Mexico cluster for her interview with a 6-year-old victim of a drive-by shooting.

Judges were winners of the December DFMies: Nels Johnson, Viktoria Sundqvist, Kelly Petryszyn, Zahira Torres, Hayley Kappes, Phillip Zonkel, Susan Abram, Bob Strauss, Mariecar Mendoza, Dai Sugano, Lisa Krieger, Maggie Wegrzyn, Aimee Heckel, Nanya Friend, Brad McElhinny and Karie Spaetzel.
