A number of Digital First Media newsrooms were recognized as finalists last week in the Associated Press Sports Editors’ annual writing and sections contest for work published in 2012.
The Denver Post is a finalist in three award categories for the over 175,000 circulation division. Denver Nuggets beat writer Benjamin Hockman is a top 10 finalist for beat reporting; Patrick Saunders, Troy E. Renck and five others are a top 10 finalist for explanatory writing; and Mahala Gaylord is a finalist for multimedia (nomination above). The Post also won honorable mention for best daily section.
A final top 5 and honorable mention will be announced for each category later this year.
Four other Digital First Media properties were also recognized in multiple categories each. They are:
- In under 30,000 circulation — The Santa Cruz Sentinel for Top 10 best daily section; Julie Jag and Jim Seimas individually for explanatory writing; Julie Jag and Jim Seimas together for breaking news; and Julie Jag, Andrew Matheson, Jacob May and Jim Seimas for top 10 project writing.
- In 75,001 to 175,000 circulation — The Detroit News for Top 10 best daily section and honorable mention special section, and Gregg Kruppa for Top 10 explanatory writing.
- In 75,001 to 175,000 circulation — The Salt Lake Tribune for Top 10 best Sunday section and honorable mention best daily section, Michael C. Lewis for breaking news and Lisa Schencker for explanatory.
- In under 30,000 circulation — The Berkshire Eagle for honorable mention special section, and Christopher James for top 10 explanatory.
Three other properties received recognition in one category:
- In over 175,000 circulation — St. Paul Pioneer Press’ Dave Orrick for Top 10 project writing.
- In 75,001 to 175,000 circulation – Los Angeles Daily News for honorable mention best Sunday section.
- In under 30,000 circulation – York Dispatch for honorable mention best daily section.
